TASHKENT/SAMARKAND, UZBEKISTAN – Tashkent and Samarkand have become members of the Green Cities Network of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Certificates issued on 20 August 2026 by the Secretariat of the Green Cities Initiative at FAO headquarters in Rome officially confirm Tashkent and Samarkand as member cities of the FAO Green Cities Network.
By joining the Network, Tashkent and Samarkand have become part of a global community of cities working together to advance greener, healthier, more resilient and inclusive urban environments. The Network promotes sustainable urban development through integrated urban greening approaches and strengthens cooperation among participating cities.
The Network promotes integrated solutions and strategies across three key areas: urban and peri-urban forestry; urban and peri-urban agriculture; and sustainable bioeconomy.
Membership in the FAO Green Cities Network provides Tashkent and Samarkand with opportunities to access technical support and capacity development, exchange knowledge and experience, participate in city-to-city collaboration platforms, receive support in aligning with relevant global frameworks and environmental agendas, develop partnerships, mobilize resources and facilitate investment, as well as enhance their international visibility as leading cities advancing sustainable urban solutions.
Launched in 2020, the Green Cities Initiative aims to achieve tangible improvements in the health and well-being of urban residents and their surrounding environments in 1 000 cities worldwide by 2030.
Cooperation within the Network is guided by the Green Cities Communiqué and the FAO Green City Principles and Criteria.
Presented at the First International Green Cities Conference in 2025, the Green Cities Communiqué articulates a shared vision and collective commitments for advancing a global movement of greener cities. The FAO Green City Principles and Criteria establish the conceptual framework and guiding principles underpinning the Green Cities Initiative.
In the coming weeks, the Secretariat of the FAO Green Cities Initiative will provide further guidance on the baseline self-assessment process. This process will support the identification of each city’s priorities and inform the provision of tailored technical assistance.
