Tashkent hosts international meeting on sustainable livestock development

On June 21-23, 2022, the 2nd Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Regional Meeting for Eastern Europe and Central Asia is held in Tashkent in a hybrid format as part of the Global Sustainable Livestock Program. The meeting was organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the State committee of veterinary and livestock development of the Republic of Uzbekistan under the slogan “Livestock for sustainable food systems”. About 140 people participate in the meeting offline, including 25 foreign guests from 9 countries.
Sustainable and inclusive livestock development that meets the demand of the population for safe and affordable food while protecting the environment makes a significant contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. A lot of work is being done in Uzbekistan to support the livestock industries, to widely introduce science-based methods and intensive technologies for increasing the competitive production for sale in the domestic and foreign markets. The legal basis for this are the Decrees of the President “On measures to further develop livestock breeding and strengthen the forage base” and “On additional measures for further state support of livestock industries”. At the meeting, the development of strategy/program for the livestock sector in the Republic of Uzbekistan for the period 2022-2026 was also presented to the attention of the participants.
The 2nd Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Regional Meeting for Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the Global Sustainable Livestock Agenda aims to share scientific knowledge, foster consensus, align interventions and formulate joint actions towards more sustainable livestock systems leaving no one behind.
The Global Livestock Agenda brings together a wide range of livestock stakeholders who advocate for the sustainable development of the sector. Through a multi-stakeholder partnership mechanism, program participants help stakeholders meet their commitments, attract investment, implement best practices and make strategic decisions in support of the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The program implements a range of initiatives, including webinars, publications, pilot projects, and regional and global meetings, thereby encouraging dialogue, synthesizing and disseminating the science needed to inform action and policy decisions for sustainable development of livestock throughout the world.
The meeting acknowledged both achievements (examples from regional situations so as to emphasize and contextualize the diversity) and forward-looking commitments to future actions that are essential for livestock contributions to sustainable, resilient, inclusive food systems.
