\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a010-11 June 2021, Tashkent<\/strong> – Within the framework of the SDG week in Uzbekistan, a round table was held on “Strengthening food security, improving diets and promoting sustainable agriculture”. Participants represented various institutions, specifically the Oliy Majlis, FAO and other UN agencies, development partners and officials of relevant government institutions.<\/div>\r\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Participants discussed different approaches to food systems, issues of food security, attracting investment in this area, problems and prospects.<\/div>\r\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cWith the adoption of the Agricultural Development Strategy for 2020-2030, the Government of Uzbekistan has recognized \u2018ensuring food security for the entire population\u2019 as the first strategic priority in the sector development. Uzbekistan displays strong political commitment to food and nutrition security with a focus \u2018on ensuring that all households have access to safe and nutritious food at affordable and stable prices\u2019 which contributes to the achievement of the SDGs of Uzbekistan, in particular SDG2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture\u201d, – said Sumiter Broca, Deputy Head of the FAO Sub-regional office for Central Asia<\/strong>.<\/div>\r\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0FAO representatives also took part in another event under the SDG week in Uzbekistan \u2013 in the Round table on the topic: “Ensuring gender equality in the new Uzbekistan”. It was noted that the Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality in the Republic of Uzbekistan until 2030 was developed fully in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. Since the matter of gender equality has been raised to the policy level the Government of Uzbekistan has adopted 25 laws regarding reduction of gender inequality.<\/div>\r\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00abOn behalf of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) I would like to note that it is great honour for us to contribute in achieving gender equality in Uzbekistan by supporting rural women. Rural women play important role in development of agriculture and economy as a whole as well as in ensuring food security, but at the same time, their work often remains invisible and unrecognized, and they belong to the most vulnerable segments of the population. And this problem should be taken into account in accordance with the main principle of the Sustainable Development Goals – “Leave no one behind”, – said Dono Abdurazakova, Senior Gender and Social Protection Adviser of the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia.<\/strong><\/div>\r\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Participants of the “round table” also discussed such topics as the state and prospects of mobilizing existing opportunities for the implementation of measures, programs and strategies to achieve gender equality and strengthening the efficiency of the social protection system for women. Recommendations were developed on all the issues considered.<\/div>\r\n
