FAO strengthens local expertise in climate-smart agriculture in the Fergana Valley

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) conducted training-of-trainers (ToT) courses in Andijan, Fergana and Namangan regions under the project “South–South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Agricultural Development in the Fergana Valley” (UNUN/SEC/028/UND). A total of 38 participants completed the courses held in September and October and received certificates.
The training aimed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of agricultural specialists and experienced farmers in sustainable soil and water management, the cultivation of climate-resilient crops and climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices. By preparing trainers, the initiative seeks to extend this knowledge to farmers, smallholders and other agricultural workers.
Participants included specialists from the Andijan Institute of Agriculture and Agrotechnologies, Fergana State University, the International Institute of Food Engineering and Technology, Namangan State Technical University, the Agency for Agro-Industry Development under the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Andijan, Namangan and Fergana regional branches of the Republican Centre for Agricultural Services. Experienced farmers and smallholders from the project areas also took part.
The programme covered approaches to improving soil health, using water efficiently and adapting agricultural production to changing climatic conditions. Strengthening participants’ technical capacities in these areas is intended to support the wider adoption of sustainable agricultural practices on farms.
Implemented by the FAO Representation in Uzbekistan, the project aims to support the development of climate-resilient agricultural systems and improve rural livelihoods in the Fergana Valley. By strengthening the knowledge and technical capacities of smallholders, cooperatives and national experts, it seeks to improve climate resilience, agricultural productivity and economic performance.
