On November 27, 2025, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed the Law “On the Accession of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the Metre Convention.” This document served as an important legal foundation for Uzbekistan’s integration into the international metrology system. Through this step, our country gained the opportunity to become a full-fledged participant in the prestigious Metre Convention established in 1875.
As a result of the adoption of this law, on April 13, 2026, this important process reached its logical conclusion, and it was officially announced that Uzbekistan had become a full member of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). This event is of exceptional importance for the metrology sector of our country, as it creates opportunities to participate in the development of international measurement standards, to take full part in the activities of the BIPM and its consultative committees, to improve the qualifications of national specialists at the international level, to ensure measurement uniformity in accordance with international requirements, to increase the competitiveness of products and services in international markets, to strengthen investor confidence, to expand export potential, and to improve the country’s performance in international rankings and indices.
Uzbekistan has also gained the right to participate in meetings of the BIPM Consultative Committees (CCs), vote, and nominate its own candidates in elections. Accession to the Convention will contribute to the establishment of an accurate, reliable, and internationally compliant measurement system in our country. This, in turn, will further strengthen the confidence of international partners, investors, and organizations in the products, services, and certificates of Uzbekistan.
Furthermore, this step is considered important for harmonizing measurement uniformity in the country with international standards, reducing technical barriers in the process of accession to the World Trade Organization, and improving the national quality infrastructure in accordance with modern requirements.
To date, the National Metrology Institute of Uzbekistan has conducted international comparisons, increased the number of Uzbekistan’s Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC entries) in the BIPM database to 19, and launched modern laboratories.
April 13, 2026, is a date that will be written in golden letters in the history of metrology of Uzbekistan. This is not only an important event, but also a major achievement in strengthening the scientific and technological development of our country and its prestige in the international arena.
